Abstract\udObjective: Student retention at regional universities is\udimportant in addressing regional and remote workforce\udshortages. Students attending regional universities are\udmore likely to work in regional areas. First year experience\udat university plays a key role in student retention.\udThis study aimed to explore factors influencing the first\udyear experience of occupational therapy students at a\udregional Australian university.\udDesign: Surveys were administered to 58 second year\udoccupational therapy students in the first week of\udsecond year. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics,\udinferential statistics (Pearson χ2; Spearman rho)\udand summarising descriptive responses.\udSetting: An Australian regional university.\udParticipants: Second year undergraduate occupational\udtherapy students.\udMain outcome measures: Factors influencing students’\uddecisions to study and continue studying occupational\udtherapy; factors enhancing first year experience of\uduniversity.\udResults: Fifty-four students completed the survey\ud(93.1%). A quarter (25.9%) of students considered\udleaving the course during the first year. The primary\udinfluence for continuing was the teaching and learning\udexperience. Most valued supports were orientation week\ud(36.7%) and the first year coordinator (36.7%).\udConclusion: The importance of the first year experience\udin retaining occupational therapy students is highlighted.\udEngagement with other students and staff and academic support are important factors in facilitating\udstudent retention. It is important to understand the\udunique factors influencing students’ decisions, particularly\udthose from regional and remote areas, to enter and\udcontinue in tertiary education to assist in implementing\udsupports and strategies to improve student retention.
